This year will be our fifth annual language and cultural immersion program. The purpose of this program is to provide our youth with an opportunity to learn the Miami language and culture in an outdoor setting. It is important for Miami youth to have access to their heritage, language and culture if they are to develop a deeper connection to their nation. It is also important that parents value the traditional language and culture and support the youth’s continued learning within the home.
The Eewansaapita Summer Educational Experience utilizes a comprehensive curriculum that follows a selected theme each year. For the 2009 program the theme is weekihkaaminki – meehkintiinki (ball games and games of chance). The program is organized by the Miami Tribe's language committee who are trained in the area of language and cultural retention.
We have several qualified and trained counselors that will serve as teachers throughout the week. Most of the counselors are Miami Tribe members who are currently students at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and have been involved in a unique program on campus to learn Miami culture and language.
We want to take this opportunity to inform you that there is a great deal of planning that goes into this program, which we hope provides a rich experience for all the participants. We hope to build a long-term relationship with students and their families and make language and cultural learning an ongoing family experience. We want to assure you that your child's safety and wellbeing are first and foremost.
