This year's language and cultural immersion program will take place June 27-30, 2011.
We have altered the format into a 4-day "day camp". Activities will be held from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. with lunch and snacks provided. Participants from out of town (who do not travel with family who intend to spend the week in the area) will stay with "host families" where they will be fed breakfast and dinner and delivered and picked up from the activity center. It is our hope that the new format will allow our camp educators to focus on teaching while still providing our participating youth with a wonderful cultural education experience.
The purpose of this program is to provide our youth with an opportunity to learn the Miami language and culture in an outdoor setting. It is important for Miami youth to have access to their heritage, language, and culture if they are to develop a deeper connection to their nation. It is also important that parents value the traditional language and culture, and support the youth’s continued learning within the home.
The Eewansaapita Summer Educational Experience utilizes a comprehensive curriculum that follows a selected theme each year. The Tribe’s language committee who are all trained in the area of language and cultural retention organizes the program.
Our qualified and trained counselors serve as teachers throughout the week. Most of the counselors are Miami Tribe members who are currently students at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and have been involved in a unique program on campus to learn Miami language and culture.
We want to take this opportunity to inform you that there is a great deal of planning that goes into this program, which we hope provides a rich experience for all the participants. We hope to build a long-term relationship with students and their families and make language and cultural learning an ongoing family experience. We want to assure you that your child’s safety and wellbeing are first and foremost.
