The 2009 Eewansaapita Summer Educational Experience is sponsored by the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma for the purpose of introducing and strengthening Miami language, cultural beliefs and traditional values among the youth of the Tribe. The program is held on the Tribe's 600-acre cultural grounds located in northeast Oklahoma. Tribal youth from 10 through 16 years old are invited to attend this week-long program. Participants come from various geographical locations around the country as well as from Oklahoma.
The theme for this year is weekihkaaminki – meehkintiinki (ball games and games of chance). Games are one way that Myaamia communities came together to celebrate seasonal changes, release competitive energies, and redistribute communal wealth through wagering. Myaamia paaskoontia (Miami ball) and peekitahaminki (Lacrosse) are two examples of ball games played by the community today. mahkisina meehkintiinki (moccasin game) – often played with pot holders instead of moccasins – and seenseewinki (bowl dice game) are two examples of games of chance that the community enjoys. This year we will explore these games as well as many more that myaamiaki (Miami people) have enjoyed through the years.
The program date for 2009 is June 21st-27th!
We are looking forward to a great time this year and hope you will join us.
